As an Operations Specialist, Venetia Tan oversees the arrival and departure of the vessels in Jurong Port. The role of an Operations Specialist in the Desktop Checker department was newly created, as, in the past, the stevedores liaised directly with the shipping agents for the work required. Her team acts as the ‘bridge’ between the agents and stevedores, ensuring all administrative matters are completed before a vessel arrives. This is important for the stevedores to facilitate loading and/or unloading of cargo smoothly when the vessel berths. After the vessel departs for its next port of call, Venetia will arrange a follow-up meeting with the stevedore and agent to finetune any issues and improve the service level for the next vessel. In addition to that, Venetia is also part of the team that looks into port’s digitalisation efforts and is leading the change to standardise documents submitted by the stevedores to the agents.
Venetia shared that “I’ve been part of JP for over a year, and I enjoy being on the ground. It has been an eye-opening experience as our multipurpose port handles different types of cargo. There is also room for grow and learn new things as JP is on a transformation journey! While the role can be stressful and fast-paced due to the nature of the business, having supportive teammates make all the difference! Despite being a small team of five, we are always there for one another.” Outside work, the team likes to bond over a game of mahjong, food, and trips over the Causeway. Venetia also like to enjoy travelling abroad and explore what the country has to offer. She said, “just like what travelling has taught me, to embrace anything that comes my way with an open mind. With a strong team, everything is possible!”
