Diving Deep into the Maritime World to Break New Grounds

Willie Liao’s career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of innovation, transitioning from aviation to maritime industries without missing a beat. His journey commenced in 2012 with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), where he gained expertise in flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) long before their widespread adoption as hobby drones in 2014. The RSAF was using UAVs to enhance the Singapore Armed Forces’s air intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

Upon completing his tenure with the RSAF, Willie ventured into business management, joining a pioneering local small-and-medium enterprise (SME) specialising in counter-unmanned aircraft systems. His responsibilities spanned the entire business spectrum, encompassing exhibitions and demonstrations to pre-sales, delivery, logistics and post-sales service. As the SME expanded, so did Willie’s global footprint, requiring him to travel to multiple countries in pursuit of business opportunities.

Post-COVID, Willie deliberated with his family on settling down and charting a new professional trajectory. Encouraged by their support, he turned his attention to the maritime sector and found himself drawn to Jurong Port (JP) and its ambitious initiatives.

For Willie, it was eye-opening to witness the discharge of cargo at the port! He was marveled at the meticulous training programmes designed to enhance workforce capabilities and the introduction of cutting-edge equipment aim at making the processes safer and more efficient.

Despite joining JP for less than a year, Willie quickly assumed a pivotal role in driving technological advancements. His daily routine involved engaging with stevedores to identify operational challenges, collaborating closely with the Operations team to pilot new innovations, accompanying senior colleague overseas to stay abreast of industry trends, and networking with industry leaders.

Energized by the opportunity to contribute to the evolution of Jurong Port into a next-generation multipurpose facility, Willie approaches each day with enthusiasm and a determination to make a meaningful impact.
