Jurong Port Makes Concerted Efforts to Ensure a Safe Working Environment
Jurong Port has been making concerted efforts to ensure a safe and healthy working
environment for all its port users since the Workplace, Safety and Health (WSH) Act
came into effect on 1 March 2006.
The Port, partnering the Ministry of Manpower and PSA Corporation, actively
participated in bizSAFE programme to improve the management of workplace safety
and health.
The Port has also started several additional initiatives, which are as follows :
- Conducting risk management courses and assessment workshops for port users,
particularly stevedoring companies, to assist them to identify, develop and implement
safe working procedures and measures to eliminate or reduce the safety and health
risks posed to workers.
- Issuing of Permit to Work, which requires stevedoring companies to submit relevant
documents prior to vessel arrival such as risk assessment, gang list, declaration of
gears etc.
- Engaging constant dialogues with port users to streamline and effect safer work
procedures and practices.
- Embarking on a safety management system and implementing third party
inspections of the general cargo handling operations.
In addition, the Port, together with appointed training providers, has been conducting
courses in lifting supervisor safety, rigging operations, forklift driving, signalling and
safety orientation. It will also be introducing the “Demerit Points” system and a licensing
scheme for stevedores and crane operators who want to work in the port.
To further enhance the safety of port users within the port, the Port will soon be
implementing measures to restrict non-operational related vehicles, including
motorcycles and bicycles, into the port and the introduction of regular shuttle bus
services for port users to travel safely in and out of the port, leaving their vehicles at a
designated car park area outside the port. Back
