Jurong Port
gears up to meet growth and challenges ahead
Since
corporatisation in 2001, Jurong Port has rapidly garnered
its resources and further built upon its expertise to carve
its niche as a truly premier multi-purpose port in Singapore
and the region.
Today, the
Port is a thriving container-handling hub with a throughput
of over 711,000 teus in 2004 and an established bulk and general
cargo-handling gateway which handled about 9.6 million tonnes
last year.
Going forward,
the Port is addressing its expanded needs to take it into
the next lap of growth. With an expected increase in overall
business and throughput, Jurong Port will be upgrading its
container and conventional cargo-handling facilities. The
Port has invited tenders to purchase 5 new container quay
cranes (4 of which are to replace older cranes), as well as
to extend container berth J25 and, extend and upgrade conventional
berth J12. The extension and upgrading of the berths will
enable the port to handle larger container and conventional
vessels at these berths respectively.
Additionally,
Jurong Port is planning to consolidate and develop other facilities
such as storage yards, warehouses and other supporting infrastructures
as well as to purchase additional equipment to increase handling
capacity, and improve utilization and efficiency.
Jurong
Port has also begun to explore opportunities overseas to replicate
the success of its multi-purpose port operations abroad, focusing
as a start in countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, China
and India.
