Zim makes Jurong Port its port-of-call for Asia-Med
Pacific Service
Jurong
Port is now the port-of-call in Singapore for Zim Israel
Navigation Companys (ZIM) Asia Mediterranean Pacific
(AMP) service. Zim was voted the ninth best shipping
line in the Asia-Middle East service category during
the Asian Freight Industry Awards 2000, organised by
Cargonews Asia.
The first AMP vessel to call Jurong Port was the M/V
Zim Singapore I, which has a
capacity of 2,500 teus. The vessel berthed at Jurong
Port on 6 December 2001.
The AMP service has altogether 13 vessels, with Zim
contributing 12 and Norasia
one. The vessels ply the major East West trade routes,
which stretch from the
Mediterranean to the Middle East, Asia, Far East and
the West Coast of North
America. The port rotation is Koper, Venice, Trieste,
Piraeus, Haifa, Colombo,
Singapore, Shekou, Hong Kong, Yantian, Shanghai, Pusan,
Vancouver, Seattle,
Pusan, Shanghai, Shekou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo,
Haifa, Alexandria and
Koper.
The AMP service vessels make two calls per week at Jurong
Port with the eastbound
calls on Wednesdays and the westbound calls on Saturdays.
Vessels of between
2,500 to 3,000 teus are deployed on this service.
The AMP service adds to Jurong Ports connectivity
and port network. Jurong Port is
now able to serve a wider range of shippers with direct
vessel calls to more destinations. The direct calls
to greater China ports are of particular interest to
local
exporters whose cargo are mainly destined for these
ports.
According to Zim, they have found new opportunities
in Jurong Ports new container
terminal. The terminal, which started in July 2001,
provides a full range of container-handling
services, plus various ancillary facilities such as
on-dock depots and container freight stations. Jurong
Port continually upgrades its handling capacity and
facilities to meet the needs of its customers.
