Since
1965, Jurong Port has been a major hub for a variety of
conventional cargo such as steel, foresty products, metals,
rubber scrap, scrap iron, project cargo and palletized
cargo. Currently, the Port handles about 5 million tonnes
of conventional cargo annually.
The
natural-deepwater Port has varying drafts alongside
its berths to accommodate conventional and containerized
vessels of all sizes; including RoRo ramps for roll
on/off cargo operations involving barges and landing
crafts. Wooden craft operators are now operating at the Small Crafts Terminal at J1 Basin and the lighter operators are operating at the Penjuru Terminal along Sungei Jurong. In addition, there are also ample transit warehouses, adjacent
to the berths, for easy ship-to-shore movement and storage
of cargo; including large apron areas for loading and
discharging operations. In addition, the Port operates
mobile harbour cranes to handle large-sized or heavy-lift
project cargo cost-effectively.
The
Port is also accredited by the London Metal Exchange
as an ideal storage and transhipment hub for companies
dealing in metals such as steel and tin ingots.
The
Conventional Cargo-handling Terminal is integrated with
the Container Terminal, which facilitates cargo movements
between the two terminals within its Free Trade Zone.
The integrated port concept has attracted companies
to locate in Jurong Port's on-dock warehouses to consolidate,
package and distribute cargo to the region.
